The Event

The Kentucky Derby event held at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, TX was a great success! This was the first adults only fundraising event for Girl Scouts – Circle T Council, Inc. It was planned and executed in less than 4 months by volunteers – most of whom were new to Girl Scouts. The vast majority of those who attended were new to Circle T also!

Venue – there was something for everyone! You could place bets on the horses in the ballroom – never having to leave. You could watch the races either on the large terrace or on the four 5’ x 7’ television screens that were in the ballroom. Or you could sit and visit or browse the auction tables. The Kentucky Derby was simulcast live on the screens.

Here are some comments from people who attended –

"What a fun event! Continuous entertainment, but casual, relaxed atmosphere! My friends thanked me for bringing them and are looking forward to next year already!"
- Renova Williams, Vice President Fundraising, Colleyville Woman’s Club

"What a fantastic idea for such a great cause.... almost felt ‘guilty’ having so much fun!"
- Charles Powell – President, Bank of Texas Fort Worth

The event was amazing…great location, just loved getting to wear hats for the Kentucky Derby, enjoyed being able to mingle with friends while placing bets on the horses. Congratulations on a wonderful successful event. Our club - Greater Southlake Women's Society - will come back next year!
– Mitzi Long, District Director for State Representative Vicki Truitt, District 98

The menu was similar to what was served at Churchill Downs, the site of the Kentucky Derby. There was carved beef tenderloin, carved Virginia ham, poached salmon with dill sauce, chicken with a lemon sauce, tortellini, Caesar salad and garden salad, Lyonnais potatoes, green beans, ham biscuits and rolls, Kentucky Derby pie, pecan pie and bread pudding with bourbon sauce! Everyone said it was the best food they ever had at a fundraising event!

Our sponsors all said they would be on board for next year as it was even better and more fun than they could have anticipated!

The Johnny D and the Doo-Wopp Band played great music. Their Elvis impersonator was great! They asked to come back next year because they had so much fun! They played intermittently from 3:30 till 8.

The next Derby will be Saturday, May 3, 2008. See you there!
